In February 2023, the City Council of Pullman, Washington approved a downtown design plan that incorporates the removal of 75 trees in the downtown area to widen the sidewalks. This design is to be funded with ARPA funds that must be allocated by December of 2024 and spent by 2026.
Save Downtown Trees is an effort to halt the planned clearcutting of the trees, with an emphasis on removal of only those trees that are dead, dying, or significant existing threats to infrastructure.
Save Downtown Trees is a group of concerned residents who have formed to attempt to negotiate to save as many trees as possible. We have made it clear to the City of Pullman that we are interested in seeing a redesign of the current plan to enable the saving of as many trees as possible. Our group includes persons who are plant pathologists, certified arborists, and landscape architects.
Our awareness efforts are peaceful. We attend relevant city meetings, using legally allowed methods to speak for the trees. We sign wave in publicly designated free speech areas. We have a petition that we encourage all to sign. In short, to borrow a line from Dr. Seuss' The Lorax: We speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.
