Habitats

Sarracenia purpurea is found in open canopy peatland and wetland areas of forests. These areas are known for their unique high-soil moisture, low nutrient, and often acidic environment. The distribution of this species extends from savannahs within pine forests in the southeastern coastal plains of the United States, up to fens and bogs in the northeast, and throughout much of Canada.  In the southern part of the native range (Florida), this habitat consists of a sandy environment with grassland species such as Aristida stricta, and is surrounded by longleaf pines. In the middle of the geographic range, this habitat starts to become a mixture of sand and peatland moss. The north of the geographic range is dominated by peatlands that contain Sphagnum moss species. S. purpurea can also be found in wetter environments, but the plants are found on raised hummocks to avoid being flooded. In the non-native European range, S. purpurea is found in peatlands similar to those of the northern part of the native range. S. purpurea has a broad thermal range, and can survive under the snow in cold climates, as well as in hot wetland environments.
