OTA 1170 Physical Dysfunction Fieldwork I is a one-hour/week lecture and thirty hour clinical site experience. Lecture prepares for the off-site experience and future fieldwork IIs by requiring academic & practical competency-based assignments. The externship will be arranged and take place at clinical facility sites within the community under the direction of an academic fieldwork coordinator. Emphasis is to expose students to a variety of diagnoses and to develop professional behaviors and clinical observation skills. This is a designated service-learning course.
Signature Assignment
This assignment allowed me to provide service to my fieldwork site. I was able to collaborate with my site educator, to find a project that would meet the current needs of their patients at the facility. This assignment allowed me to be creative with the patient's needs in mind.
Reflection:
My fieldwork opportunity allowed me to engage in multiple learning outcomes. One that stands out was recognizing and abiding by facility and federally mandated requirements for patient confidentiality and patient rights. Actively practicing HIPAA in a clinical setting was an interesting challenge. This was something I never thought would be difficult, but limiting my vocabulary to not include descriptive details was something I'm glad I could experience early on. During my fieldwork, I had the opportunity to observe and participate in the occupational therapy process as it relates to adult rehabilitation services and evidence-based practice. This was my biggest learning outcome overall. During these observations, I was able to fully understand many aspects of our curriculum. Lastly, I engaged in the learning outcome of demonstrating competency in service maintenance tasks emphasizing set-up/clean-up/safety for client and clinician. This was performed during a COVID outbreak at my assigned facility. Engaging in proper PPE to protect patients was an experience that taught me how important it is to provide a clean, safe environment for patients.
