In 2016, I worked with the association of deaf parents, Asociación Iquitos Unidos en Señas, to establish the first public deaf education program in Iquitos. The education program consists of two classrooms, a multigrade primary and multigrade secondary classroom. The majority of the students who enter the deaf education program have no previous access to an established language. The school provides them with the opportunity to gain access to Peruvian Sign Language, as well as gain literacy in Spanish.
