Parents have the right and responsibility to direct their child's education, and to provide spiritual, emotional, and political instruction. The role of the school is to provide an academic education.
I am passionate about parents' rights & responsibilities. The "in loco parentis" is latin for "in place of the parent." It legally grants schools to take on some of the responsibilities of a parent in your absence. There seems to be a growing over-reach in this area. I believe that what "in loco parentis" means is that when your children are in school, away from you, that the school will keep them safe in your absence. If your child misbehaves, they will receive discipline, similar to how a parent would discipline. If your child is injured, the school will provide care similar to how a parent would. If your child's feelings are hurt, the school will provide a caring space to help the child, similar to the parent. This should never mean that spiritual, political, and ideological topics are the responsibility of the school. These are strictly parent responsibilities.
Your kids are your own. The public school system serves you and your child.
