SAPS Recruitment FAQs

After applying

How will I know if I'm shortlisted?

By email and phone — the ones on your application. Keep them active.

How long does the whole process take?

Months. From application to academy reporting can stretch well over half a year. Be patient and don't resign from a current job until you have a written offer.

Can I choose my academy?

No. SAPS allocates trainees.

What should I do while waiting?

Get fit. Seriously — the fitness assessment ends more candidacies than any other single stage. Run, train, and arrive ready.

Money

How much is the training stipend?

R5,000 per month during basic training, with accommodation and meals provided at the academy.

What will I earn as a constable?

A full SAPS salary with government benefits — pension, medical aid options, and allowances. Exact figures follow SAPS salary scales at appointment.

Scams

Someone on WhatsApp offered to get me in for R2,000. Real?

No. That's a crime — report the number to SAPS.

A website looking exactly like the SAPS portal asked for my bank details. What do I do?

Close it, don't enter anything, and report the URL to SAPS. The real portal never asks for bank details to apply.

Requirements in detail

The application

Where do I apply?

Only at erecruitment.saps.gov.za. Nowhere else.

Is there an application fee?

No. It's free. Anyone asking for money is scamming you.

Can I apply at a police station?

No. Walk-in and paper applications aren't accepted for this intake.

What if I make a mistake on the form?

Check if the portal lets you edit before the closing date. If not, you may need to contact SAPS support through the portal. Don't submit a second application — duplicates can disqualify you.

I didn't get a confirmation email. What now?

Check spam first. Then log back into the portal — your application status should show there. Screenshot everything.

Can I apply for more than one intake advert?

Follow the advert's instructions. Generally, one application per intake — duplicates cause problems.

Eligibility

What are the minimum requirements?

South African citizen, 18–35 years old, Grade 12 / matric certificate, no criminal record, physically and mentally fit, proficient in English.

Can I apply with a diploma instead of matric?

A diploma doesn't replace the matric requirement — you need the Grade 12 certificate or a recognised equivalent. Diplomas strengthen your application on top of it.

I'm 17 but turn 18 in December. Can I apply?

No. You must be 18 when you apply, and applications close 13 November 2026.

Can permanent residents apply?

No. Citizenship is required.

Does a traffic fine count as a criminal record?

Minor traffic fines generally aren't criminal records, but anything that went to court might be. When in doubt, get a police clearance certificate and declare everything honestly.
