The Case of the Mystery Metals

The Criminal Investigation Unit of the F.B.I has just employed you. An agent responding to a call from the SAAS School, noticed six mysterious solid objects located in Lab B.

They are concerned about the nature of these objects. They would like you and your team to investigate and determine the exact composition of these objects. A formal investigative report (aka Lab Report!) is expected to your division leader as soon as possible. After you have identifed each mystery metal, research that metal and support your identification with evidence. Make sure this is restated in your own words.

1. Help! I'm sinking

Read the paragraph below, discuss with your team.

Caroline and her friend Rita are on vacation with Caroline’s family to the Great Salt Lake in Utah. On the first day of their trip, they raced down to the shoreline of

the lake and rented a canoe. When they got to the shoreline with the canoe, they stopped short in amazement. People were floating in the lake with their heads far out of the water, even though they weren’t making any swimming motions. They put the canoe in the water, got in, and started paddling. Almost immediately, the canoe tipped over. The water was not deep, so they up righted the canoe and set out again. The same thing happened. They never had this problem when they canoed on fresh water lakes.

Why does the canoe keep tipping over? What could the girls do to keep the canoe afloat?
