Sandra Baker

Hi, I am Sandy Baker, and I am a graduate of Bemidji State University, Bemidji, MN, with a K-12 Bachelor of Science degree in Vocal Music Education. A master’s degree in Leadership in Education was achieved in 2002 from Southwest State University, Marshall, MN.

Teaching Assignment:

High School: I am presently the 7-12 Choral Director at KMS, where I have two choirs: Jr. High (7-8) and Sr. High (9-12). There are 53 members in the Jr. High Choir and 73 members in the Sr. High Choir. There is a new class at KMS this year, and I am happy to be teaching Music 8, which is an eighth grade general music class! In addition to Choirs and General Music 8, I am given time to teach lessons and have sectionals, outside of choir time to the KMS Choir members. I am also the vocal coach for the KMS Pop Group, along with being the vocal coach for KMS Musicals, and preparing students for the Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Elementary: The Elementary portion of this job is teaching music to students in grades four, five, and six. Students in grades 4-5-6 meet four times every week, for 25 minutes. I also direct the KMS 4-5-6 Choir, “Singing Saints,” which meets once every week.

Other Choral Opportunities at KMS: Many KMS students have participated in the American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA) Honor Choirs. The ACDA Honor Choir participants are in grades 4-10. The ACDA Honor Choirs are highly respected and many students from across the state of Minnesota audition through a rigorous online audition process. The ACDA Boys, Girls, and Mixed Honor Choirs have well-known guest directors, and rehearse and perform in the Twin Cities area. In additions to Honor Choir experiences, the KMS Jr. High Choir attends a Middle School Choral Festival every year, sponsored by Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA). The KMS Sr. High Choir and the KMS Pop Group often performs outside of KMS to area Assisted Livings, Care Centers, Nursing Homes, Churches, and/or Civic organizations.

This year the KMS Sr. High Choir will be traveling to Chicago in March 2020, to enjoy the rich history of this city, attend a broadway workshop and musical, perform, and spend time together!
