As the demand for organic produce continues to rise, S&S Plaza SciCAT Farm supports the transition of organic farming systems that prioritize ecological balance and community well-being. The economic Viability of OFPVH is supplemented by dependency reduction on expensive chemical interventions that therefore lowers the production cost (Xu et al., 2020).
Its significance lies in its capability to enhance sustainability, improve economic outcomes, and enrich the tourist experience. On our farm, this unique feature commences from organic preparation of planting materials to quality propagation management practices– medium preparation, sowing, and seedling management. Effective nursery management leads to vast production of organic plantain materials.
As global agriculture continues to evolve, adoption of grafting methods enhances crop resilience, yield and quantity. Its visibility is amplified by the collaboration of BPI-LBNCRDPSC and DOST-PCAARRD, which involves the union of rootstock with a scion, allowing combination of traits to improve stress tolerance, enhance fruit quality, and increase yield stability.
Dragon Fruit– Hylocereus spp., has gained significant attention due to its economic potential and health benefits. S&S Plaza SciCAT FArm showcases this technology where its primitive foundation was adopted from one of the first SciCAt Farms– Silan Agri Farm, Indang Cavite.
Biochemical properties of garlic– organosulfur compounds, adverts antioxidant and anti-cancer properties(Lu et al., 2023) This aggregates the significance of quality and effective garlic production . Due to environmental and anthropogenic factors affecting the garlic bulb development and yield, recommended field practices and garlic varieties were developed through various garlic intervention and trials pioneered by BPI-LBNCRDPSC.
As climate change continues to pose challenges to traditional farming methods, adoption of this technology comprises a strategy in cultivation of leafy vegetables under optimal growing conditions, efficiency in pest management, economic viability, and supports sustainable agricultural farming methods.
Significance of Black Pepper embodies phytochemical composition– peprine, responsible for its pungency and health benefits (Zakerish et al., 2023). However, identified issues of low productivity of black pepper plants, and low quality of fruits produced preludes this production technology developed by BPI LBNCRDPSC and DA-BAR. A vertical planting method, single and double nodal cuttings in seedling propagation, and treatment for disease resistance management were practiced in our farm.
A program supported by DA and BPI, oyster mushroom– Pleurotus ostreatus, proceeds with a requirement of minimal arable space and can utilize agricultural waste as substrates promoting environmental action for disposal systems (Rosdiana & Afifaf, 2027).
An A-Frame hydroponics system emerged as an advanced method for cultivation of leafy vegetables due to its efficiency to save space and resources. This technology addresses food security issues in urban and rural areas when limitations on fresh produce are visible.
In addressing various socio-economic and environmental challenges posed by rapid urbanization, urban agriculture commits food security, economic development, and environmental sustainability. Here in S&S Plaza SciCAT Farm showcases this method of growing crops.
BPI-Los Baños is one of the national breeding institution in the country with more than ninety (90) varieties of tomato, mungbean, polo sitao, and other crops developed, registered and approved by National Seed Industry Council (NSIC). At S&S Plaza, NSIC-approved varieties of mungbean, soybean, and pole sitao were cultivated using organic practices.
Rabbits are known for their efficient feed conversion, rapid reproduction, and minimal space requirements- making them ideal for integration into-small scale and urban farming systems. At S&S plaza, rabbit prodeuction follows eco-firendly and principles, complementing the farm's overall advocacy for organic and sustainable agriculture.
S&S Plaza also showcases indigenous vegtables (IVs), crops such as malabar, spinach, sesame, jute mallow, and sweet potato, selected for their adaptability, nutritional value, and resilience. Production of seeds and planting materials were continuously done to ensure its availability and sustainability.
