The Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol is the head of the entire department. The Commissioner oversees many sub offices of the department including:

In addition to heading the aforementioned sub offices, the Commissioner’s day-to-day duties include:
Overseeing the operation of the entire department
Communicating with external departments to resolve interdepartmental affairs
Managing the department’s fleet of patrol vehicles, including new acquisitions
The Commissioner is also the head of the Chain of Command and will have the final say in all department matters/disputes.
The Deputy Commissioner of the Highway Patrol is the second highest ranking individual in the department. He/she is the Commissioner’s assistant when it comes to department matters and serves as Interim Commissioner in his/her absence. The Deputy Commissioner is also a member of several sub offices and carries out the following duties:

The Assistant Commissioner of the Highway Patrol is the third highest-ranking individual in the department. The Assistant Commissioner is also a member of several sub-offices and carries out the following duties:

The CHP Commander of Administration is responsible for all administrative tasks delegated to the Commander’s Office. Included in this are the following responsibilities:

The CHP Patrol Commander is responsible for any and all things regarding the logistics of the field operations of the department. Included in this are the following responsibilities:

The CHP Captain(s) of Administration are in charge of all paperwork and administrative items pertaining to the operation of the department. The captain(s) of Administration directly supervise the Lieutenant(s) of Administration, ensure that rosters are being updated accurately, and that CHP CoC documents are secure. In addition, the Captains of Administration are responsible for managing patrol logs, and each of the two serve as the commander of one of the department’s two patrol teams.

The CHP Patrol Sergeant works under the supervision, and in coordination with, the other patrol supervisors, and directly supervises the department Officers and Cadet. The Patrol Sergeant are tasked as the CHP’s FTO (Field Training Officer).

The CHP Patrol Troopers works under Sergeant supervision, assisting motorists in need of help, and working with other emergency officials to help manage and eventually clear accident scenes. They also assist local police forces in apprehending criminals or assisting in emergency situations.
The CHP Cadet are Trainee or Candidate Troopers that are in process of becoming a Troopers of California Highway Patrol. They are required for Basic Training such as (Driving Patrol Vehicles, Learning Basic stuff during ride-along and more learning experiences) with a Higher Command Troopers that are Higher Rank. Cadet always required Basic Training in order to become a California Highway Patrol.
Duties - The CHP has two Master Sergeant positions: One Master Sergeant of Administration and One Master Sergeant of Patrol. Below are their separate duties:
Master Sergeant of Administration: Vacant.
The primary duty of a Master Sergeant of Administration is to supervise the Sergeant First Classes and the Senior Sergeants on their duties. In addition, the Master Sergeant of Administration is responsible for handling Leave of Absence (LOA) requests. The Master Sergeant of Administration works under the direct supervision of the Lieutenant of Administration.
Master Sergeant of Patrol: Vacant.
The primary duty of a Master Sergeant of Patrol is to supervise the Staff Sergeants and the Sergeants on their duties. In addition, the Master Sergeant of Patrol is responsible for recognizing those in the department that have received commendation forms. The Master Sergeant of Patrol works under the direct supervision of the Patrol Lieutenant.
Duties - The CHP has two Sergeant First Class positions. The Sergeant First Class works under the supervision of the Master Sergeant of Administration. The primary duty of the Sergeant first class is to oversee and direct the Senior Sergeants on their duties. The Sergeant First Class is also responsible for assisting the Master Sergeant of Administration in Leave of Absence (LOA) requests.
Duties - The primary duty of an CHP Staff Sergeant is acting as a senior supervisor for the department’s Field Training Officer (FTO) Program. Staff Sergeants operate under the direction of the Master Sergeant of Patrol, and directly supervise the department Sergeants.
Duties - The CHP Senior Sergeants’ primary duty is to serve as Community Relations Officers for the department. As a Community Relations Officer, Senior Sergeants obtain feedback from other departments and work to improve and maintain interdepartmental relations. Senior Sergeants also work under the supervision of the Lieutenant(s) of Administration to update and manage department rosters.
Duties - Sergeant is the first rank in the CoC that is considered a “Staff” rank. Sergeants are responsible for handling transfer requests, both in and out of the department, and Reserve Trooper applications. Sergeants also serve as supervisors to the Field Training Officer (FTO) program. Sergeants directly supervise the Senior Corporals and operate under the direct supervision of the Staff Sergeants.
Duties - Senior Corporals in the CHP are responsible for operating under the supervision of the department Sergeants, assisting in the duties of reviewing transfer applications and applications for Reserve Trooper. Senior Corporals also assist with FTO Evaluations when necessary and serve as the department recruit and reserve coordinator. Senior Corporals also serve as supervisors to the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program.
Duties - Corporal is the first rank in the department CoC. Corporals work under the direct supervision of the Staff Sergeants and assist in delivering necessary services related to the CHP FTO program, for example, ride along. Corporals also serve as supervisors to the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program.
