Copyright is a license the author has for their work- it can only be shared or used by other individuals if they have been granted permission by the original creator/author of the work, image, page or document etc. The work is protected by laws around the world.
I think the most important fact about copyright that I would stress on my students is taking someone's work without their permission whether that would be an image, a sentence, a phrase or a whole document is just like stealing. It's okay to look at other's ideas to help make you understand something but it's not okay to claim it as your own or use someone else's work unless they are okay with it.
It's important to make sure when encouraging the use of technology and internet, that students can feel safe on the internet and these technological means. There are many ways to protect students and help them feel safe, and one of the best ways is to inform them about it. There is one tool in particular I would like to use in my classroom to help explain how to maintain a safe online environment for all students, NSteens.org. It's a platform that has videos on topics about cybersafety and bullying. They can be assigned to watch these videos, perform similar skits and discuss in groups what went right and wrong in these videos to help see what they gained from these videos. This website especially discusses how to avoid cyberbullying and examples of it to show students how to deal with certain situations. There are also quizzes, games and more to help engage students!
