The image of the scientific-method-as-flow-chart seems to exist in almost every elementary and middle school science classroom in North America. However, these images usually have spurious citations or are completely lacking them. Who originally created this chart and who was the first to conceive of the scientific method as a list is currently -- as far as I can tell -- a mystery. I want to solve this mystery. Along the way, I hope to write a history of the image and its development over time looking at how it influenced the broader cultural conception of science itself.
