Through my education and experience, I have learned a great deal about effective leadership in healthcare and within the nursing profession. Although health policy is heavily influenced by groups and individuals not involved in healthcare, I am hopeful that I can contribute to the development of policies that reduce health disparity. Through continued involvement in professional organizations locally and nationally I aim to support health policies that benefit disadvantaged communities.
This paper analyzes how health policy is influenced by lobbying groups and professional organizations. It discusses challenges to improvement of the current healthcare system and reasons many policies are met with resistance. By identifying powerful stakeholders, nurses and leaders can develop strategies to engage them to produce effective changes to national healthcare. My education and experiences have helped me understand levels of management and how to navigate these systems to produce change that facilitates patient-centered care.
This paper summarizes findings from local and national sources to scale the public health concern of fentanyl overdose. Through my experiences in various clinical settings, I have gained an understanding of public health resources that promote population health. My time at Chesapeake Integrated Behavioral Health Center allowed me to see how community programs can benefit people who have limited access to resources and can help keep disadvantaged people out of hospitals. This also helped me understand the need for patient-centered care transitions. In the emergency department, it has been especially important for me to educate my patients on public health resources available to them so they can avoid being readmitted or experiencing acute illness again.
This paper identifies paid maternity leave as a priority for national legislators and describes how one proposed policy will promote health equity, strengthen the workforce, and reduce care costs. I analyzed stakeholder concerns and strategized ways to gain the interest of powerful advocacy groups.
