Courtauld Gallery, 2024

As part of my studies at the Guildhall School, I was given the opportunity to write a piece for harp, viola, and flute as part of a concert on 18th Jan 2024, celebrating works by impressionist artists. I chose 'fisherman in a Moored Boat', a wonderful sketch by Georges Seurat

Below is the painting, a program note, and a video of the performance.

The tone of the piece moves from solitary and melancholic, to content and uplifting, mirroring how I thought the emotions may flow. The solo flute playing a longing melody, is representative of the man. The viola acts as a guiding inner voice, comforting the flute and showing it a different side to solitude. As time progresses, the man catches a fish, the thrill subsides, and he returns to his solitary state.
