Case Study Overview
This MBA project was based on a Harvard Business School case on Merck & Co. The assignment was to analyze Merck’s strategic decision and recommend a path forward. The case focused on whether Merck should pursue an acquisition in the hepatitis C market or rely on internal development.
My Analysis
In my portion of the presentation, I introduced a third option beyond the two presented in the case. I argued that the acquisition posed meaningful regulatory and reputational risk for Merck, based on the company’s historical context and the safety concerns tied to the target’s pipeline.
My Recommendation
I recommended that Merck diversify beyond hepatitis C through open innovation, focusing on less volatile opportunities such as biosimilars and external innovation partnerships. This idea helped shape the group’s final recommendation for Merck.
