Main tasks:    

• to evaluate the effects of marine gateway reconfigurations on hydrology, biogeochemistry, marine and terrestrial biota, global climate, thermohaline circulation. 

• to test the hypothesis that basin restriction and salt giant formation impact climate and life in specific, predictable ways regardless of the temporal and spatial setting. 

• to quantify the impacts of each salt giant in a uniform way, and then identify similarities and differences both in terms of the impacts themselves as well as of the mechanisms controlling them.
