Reflection or Comment on Course Field Notes

The Artificial Intelligence in the Built Environment course has been one of the most valuable and insightful subjects that I have studied during my academic journey. Throughout the semester, the course introduced us to the rapidly developing field of artificial intelligence and demonstrated how AI technologies can be integrated into architecture and the built environment. The subject broadened my perspective on design thinking and showed me that technology can become a powerful partner in architectural practice when used responsibly.

The course covered a wide range of topics, including AI awareness, generative design, environmental analysis, sustainability, ethics, and professional responsibility. Through lectures, discussions, and assignments, I learned that artificial intelligence can assist architects in collecting information, exploring alternative design solutions, performing environmental studies, and improving communication and visualization. More importantly, I learned that the true value of AI lies not in producing final answers but in expanding possibilities and encouraging deeper critical thinking.

The assignments in this course challenged me to rethink my design process. Working on the redesign of the Cultural Passage project allowed me to explore how AI can contribute to environmental performance, user experience, and sustainability strategies. The process taught me the importance of questioning AI outputs, evaluating different alternatives, and refining ideas through iterative exploration. It also improved my research abilities, problem-solving skills, and confidence in integrating digital technologies into architectural design.

I would also like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to our lecturer, Professor Idris, for his dedication and continuous effort throughout the semester. Professor Idris invested a great deal of time and energy in preparing and delivering the course materials. His explanations were always clear, detailed, and easy to understand, even when discussing complex concepts related to artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. He consistently guided us step by step and encouraged us to think critically rather than simply accepting information at face value.

One aspect that I particularly appreciated was his teaching approach. Professor Idris created an engaging learning environment where students were encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussions, and explore ideas independently. He was always patient, supportive, and willing to provide additional clarification whenever needed. His passion for teaching and his commitment to ensuring that every student understood the subject matter significantly enhanced my learning experience.

Perhaps the most important lesson that I will remember from this course is Professor Idris's continuous reminder that artificial intelligence is only a tool and can never replace the architect. He repeatedly emphasized that AI should be used as an assistant to support research, creativity, analysis, and decision-making. However, the responsibility for critical thinking, professional judgement, ethical considerations, and final design decisions will always remain with the architect.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank Professor Idris for his patience, guidance, encouragement, and dedication throughout this course. The knowledge, skills, and perspectives that I gained have significantly improved my understanding of artificial intelligence and its future role in architecture. This course has not only taught me how to use AI tools but has also taught me how to use them responsibly, critically, and professionally in becoming a better future architect.
