Often mistakenly attributed to the Shakers, How Can I Keep From Singing was first published by Anna Bartlett and Robert Lowry in the New York Observer in 1868. Lowry was a baptist minister and composer of many gospel hymns including "Shall we gather at the River". In the early 20th century, How Can I Keep Singing became a favorite hymn with the Quakers and was made popular by folksong artist, Pete Seeger.
