About Get Off the Track
Get Off the Track! was an abolitionist song written by Jesse Hutchinson and performed in the 1840s by the Hutchinson Family Singers, a popular American vocal group from Lynn and New Hampshire known for combining close harmonies with strong social reform messages. The song was first sung in Salem at the New England Anti-Slavery Convention on April 11,1844 at Salem’s Lyceum Hall. The Hutchinsons were active supporters of several reform movements, including the temperance movement, women’s suffrage, and especially, the abolition of slavery. They performed all over the region and shared platforms with leading reformers such as Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison. In 1883, they performed for the Women’s suffrage rally at the Tabernacle Church in Salem.
