Town of Christiansburg

2020 Locality of the Year!

August 3, 2020 - COVID-19 caused many challenges and created many obstacles during 2020, yet the localities in Salem District continued to press forward and meet the expectations of providing transportation facilities and services to their residents.

While we were unable to hold the 2020 Locally Administered Program Day, we were still happy to be able to recognize the hard work of one locality who excelled during these uncertain times.  Congratulations to the Town of Christiansburg!!!

Roanoke County

October 31, 2018 - Roanoke County celebrated the completion of the first phase of the Plantation Road Bicycle, Pedestrian and Streetscape Improvement project with a fun Halloween ribbon cutting!

The Plantation Road Project began in 2009 and since that time approximately $4.2 million in federal, state and local funds have been allocated for the project to design and construct a 10-foot-wide shared-use path from Williamson Road to Walrond Drive along with street trees and curb and gutter .

Town of Boones Mill

January 30, 2018 - Boones Mill officials, VDOT staff, construction team members, volunteers and railroad history enthusiasts gathered to mark the start of the work to stabilize the former railroad depot building.

Town officials hope to turn the depot, which was added to the state and national historic registers, into a museum and community space with live music and other events.  Town officials stressed that, although the depot is undergoing renovations, it will remain authentic and true to its history.

City of Galax

December 2015, City of Galax completed a multi-faceted "Bottom" area project with a $1.4 million Department of Housing and Community Development grant, along with funding from the Virginia Department of Transportation.  The project provided a gateway entrance to Main Street and downtown, addressed recurring drainage issues that had persisted for over 40 years, and revitalized the commercial, industrial and residential aspects of the area.
