Becoming a member of a local church is more than joining an organization — it’s a declaration of belonging, commitment, and shared faith. At our church, membership is rooted in Scripture and reflects our desire to live out the gospel together in meaningful, accountable community.
The New Testament gives us a picture of believers who gathered regularly, shared resources, grew in faith, and took responsibility for one another’s spiritual growth. These early Christians were devoted members of a body, each part playing a vital role (Acts 2:42–47; Romans 12:4–5).
Church membership allows us to:
Care for one another with intention
Organize leadership and service roles
Guard sound doctrine and church unity
Support mission efforts near and far
Live out the gospel in community
Scripture teaches that churches are to be led by qualified pastors, supported by deacons, and strengthened by every member using their gifts (Ephesians 4:11–13; 1 Timothy 3:1–13; Hebrews 13:17).
Becoming a member of our church means choosing to follow Jesus in covenant with a local body.
Following Jesus as Lord and Savior, beginning with salvation and believer’s baptism, and continuing in a life of obedience and spiritual growth.
Participating in the life of the church, through regular worship, Bible study, service, and fellowship.
Supporting the mission by praying, giving, and serving — both locally and globally.
Pursuing personal holiness through daily spiritual disciplines and living in a way that honors Christ.
Giving faithfully, investing your time, gifts, and resources to build up the church and serve the community.
We believe in taking the gospel across the street and around the world:
Our "Jerusalem" — our local Rhea County community
Our "Judea" — our state and region of East Tennessee
Our "Samaria" — our nation, the United States of America.
To the Ends of the Earth — global missions on Earth
Through Baptism: If you are baptized as a believer at Salem Baptist Church, you become a member of our church family at baptism. Baptism is the personal testimony of one's salvation, the church’s affirmation of their salvation, and entrance into the church body for membership.
Through Letter: If you are coming from another Baptist church, you may join via transfer of letter. Our clerk will request your letter from your former place of membership and you will be accepted upon the return of your letter.
Through Statement of Faith: You can join by statement of faith if you have been baptized as a believer from another denomination or church.
Baptism: A Beautiful Beginning
Believer's baptism is a church ordinance in the Southern Baptist denomination. We believe this is a step of obedience after someone places their faith in Jesus. We baptize by full immersion as a public testimony of faith.
Because we’re just a mile from the river, many of our members choose to be baptized outdoors at the dock at Frazier Park. This outdoor river baptism has become a meaningful and joyful tradition for our church family. Of course, we also have an heated indoor baptistry for those who prefer an indoor setting.
