As part of the mandatory noncredit course ME 370 at BUET, I participated in a three-week internship program organized by the Mechanical Engineering Department in collaboration with the Haripur Power Plant. This program, our first hands-on training as undergraduates, provided an invaluable opportunity to explore the plant’s operations in detail.
During the internship, I visited and studied various critical systems, including the Gas Turbine Generator and Auxiliaries, Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), Steam Turbine Generator, Condensate and Feed Water Systems, Main and Auxiliary Cooling Water Systems, Fuel Gas Supply, and Compressed Air Systems. Additionally, I gained insights into essential support systems like Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Chlorination, Electrical Systems, and Fire Fighting mechanisms.
Through practical assignments and site visits, I developed a foundational understanding of power plant operations and energy systems, which enriched my academic and professional growth.
The BUET Power Plant, situated on the West Palashi campus of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), is a 5 MW gas engine facility that fulfills the university’s electrical energy needs. Operating daily from early morning until midnight, it supplies electricity through an 11 kV underground cable to three substations, distributing power at 230 V to various buildings, pumps, and streetlights. At night, the power supply seamlessly switches to the Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA) grid using Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), ensuring uninterrupted electricity without manual intervention. Alongside the gas engine plant, an 800 kW diesel plant is planned for future use, designed to operate when gas is unavailable, although it remains unused at present.
While at the BUET Power Plant, I conducted an in-depth analysis of the gas engine generation unit and its subsystems. I examined operational details, assessed key systems like fuel supply, cooling, lubrication, and exhaust, and analyzed performance data to evaluate engine efficiency. Witnessing the power plant's complexity and scale was overwhelming, enriching my knowledge.
