Capt. A.K.Karkare is a Master Mariner and has served at sea for 15 years in Indian and Foreign Shipping Companies with distinction from 1956 -1971.
In 1971, he joined the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) as a pilot and served for 22 years. He retired from MbPT as Director Pollution Control and Marine Projects in 1993.
While working in the port sector he was associated with development and modernization of two major Ports of India JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port) and MbPT (Mumbai Port Trust). He was responsible for bringing in VTMS (Vessel Traffic Management Service) with the use of common Radars in both these Ports.
In 1993 he joined as a Director in Indo–Dutch LPG gas Company “IMS Petrogas” and put up India’s first private sector LPG storage facility at Porbandar, Gujarat.
Capt. Karkare’s safety audit report of Alang shipyard (1993-1994) is a well documented study for the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB). The Gujarat State Government received the consultancy services of Capt.A.K.Karkare especially in the sector of amendment of IPA Act of 1908 and preparation of white paper on development of ports of Gujarat.
Since 1998 he has specialized in captive and private port infrastructure planning and sea-coast based refinery, cement, iron ore, coal and power projects projects. Capt.A.K.Karkare has also gainfully interacted in many projects in his professional capacity in minor and intermediate ports of Gujarat Maritime Board such as Porbandar, Magdalla, Jamnagar, Mundra, Pipavav, Okha, Dahej, Hazira, Bhavnagar and Alang.
His contribution to GMB resulted in a lot of interaction with GMB management of their ports. For.e.g. his suggestion of VTMS system born out of extensive study of Hazira–Magdalla channel in March 2002 resulted in Magdalla obtaining the VTMS system. The study of lighterage system of various GMB ports including Magdalla and Bhavnagar improved the operations in the ports. The study at Magdalla included clinker operations done for Narbada Cement to coal lighterage operations commencing in early 1994 onwards which are continuing till today.
He has served as Marine Advisor and Consultant on several panels as listed below to many Government and non-Government organizations.

Dr. Mrs. Ishwari Karkare is the Managing Director and Proprietor of Sai Techno Consultants.
An accomplished professional in her own right, Mrs. Karkare earned her Ph.D. in 1963, at the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani in Botany. Her thesis committee included distinguished members from Cornell University, USA. At the time earning the doctorate degree was a huge achievement. She was a postdoctoral fellow at BITS, Pilani 1963-1964. Her research work was published in three Phyton, Annals of Botany journals in Austria.
Mrs. Karkare, then went on to raise her family with Capt. A.K. Karkare, after her marriage to him in 1964. In 1976, she commenced her career in Academia, by joining K.C College in Mumbai as a Professor of Botany and taught Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Botany. After a successful tenure, she retired in 1996.
Mrs. Karkare had the privilege of sailing with her husband and family during her husband’s sea faring days and took a keen interest in learning and understanding the various aspects of the Maritime Industry. So, it was no surprise when she ventured into the enterprise of her husband’s consultancy to become the Managing Director and Proprietor of Sai Techno Consultants when it was launched in October 1998.
Dr. Mrs. Ishwari Karkare and Capt. A.K. Karkare are life partners in the truest sense as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2014 and continue to work together side by side. She is a perfectionist and a thorough professional who is a perfect match to his technical competence.
