About Pete Lane

Singer-songwriter Pete Lane has been part of Bristol’s music scene since the late 1980s, beginning his career as a drummer. Over the years, he has performed and recorded with some of Bristol’s leading bands and international artists, experiencing all the twists and turns of a life in music—from being signed and dropped to touring throughout the UK, Europe and the United States, as well as appearing at many major festivals.

While continuing to play drums for various artists, Pete began writing and recording his own material at home after becoming a father to two boys in 2003. This new creative direction led to his first solo releases, Altruism and You Need to Know Why, in 2007.

Encouraged by the response to his music, Pete formed The Weeds—an electric alternative-rock band that brought some of his songs to life through live performances and recordings. However, much of his growing catalogue called for a different approach, drawing more heavily on modern folk, Americana and pop.

The Sailing Stones emerged from this desire for a broader and more diverse musical outlet. After meeting Ben Fletcher and Ed Duffield, Pete was able to perform and record a more eclectic selection of his material. Since then, The Sailing Stones have gone from strength to strength, developing into a large and evolving collective of musicians involved in both recording and live performance.

Away from the stage, Pete has worked as an outdoor educator for more than 20 years. He is a husband and father who continues to write music, lead The Sailing Stones and perform as a drummer on projects that genuinely interest and inspire him.
