El Homan

"El Homan" is a project that highlights the unusual rise in temperatures. The word "El Homan" means extreme heat in the Algerian dialect. With the arrival of summer, many Algerians from inland areas head to the sea to alleviate the intense heat, especially over the past three years, as Algeria and the Mediterranean region have been recording high temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius.

According to a report issued by the World Wildlife Fund, the rapid warming of the Mediterranean Basin will lead to a rise in sea levels. Due to climate change, the Mediterranean countries face a bleak future, with the sea warming 20% more than other regions in the world, in addition to the overexploitation of its resources and pollution of its waters.

Environmental expert and climate justice advisor for the Middle East and North Africa at Oxfam International, which works to alleviate global poverty, Safa Al Jayoussi, warned of the danger of continued global temperature rise. She confirmed that reaching or exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius will lead to irreversible tipping points. 

She explained that the world is experiencing a climatic pattern in which the Global South, including the Arab region and North Africa, is the most affected. Al Jayoussi pointed out that these regions will suffer greatly in the coming years, and she emphasized that climate extremes will be severe during the current summer.
