Philanthropies
Mission Statement: The mission of Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. is to support educational and charitable goals of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity through philanthropic endeavors.
Sigma Alpha Iota has a variety of philanthropies that we regularly donate to! Here are some of the philanthropies SAI is a part of:
People-to-People projects provide material assistance and encouragement to schools, music organizations and musicians in many parts of the world where small things can make a big difference.
The Music Therapy Project began just after World War II with gifts of such items as tape recorders, record players, clinic organs, portable pianos, autoharps, and other small instruments to Veterans' hospitals. This was followed by personal work with veterans on the part of chapter members and soon the activity was expanded to include other hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and schools for handicapped children. This has continued throughout the years to help in healing, rehabilitation and enrichment through music.
Services for Musicians with Special Needs resulted from the merging and expansion of two former SAI Philanthropies projects which served blind and low-vision musicians: the Braille and Tape Services Project, and the Bold Notes Project. Currently, this project serves visually impaired musicians within and outside of the fraternity by providing information about available resources for blind and low-vision musicians.
The Bold Notes Project is a special interest area of the Services for Musicians with Special Needs which evolved from the Services for the Visually Impaired.
Pan’s Cottage still welcomes composers and other MacDowell Colony Fellows, just as it did in 1919 when it was completed with funds provided by SAI members. The “cottage” is actually a handsome 3-story white house which can accommodate 12 artists, the largest residence facility at the Colony. SAI is largely responsible for funding and maintaining Pan’s Cottage. The building houses artists from all artistic disciplines at the secluded New Hampshire artists’ retreat, where thousands of composers, writers, and visual artists have come over the years to do their creative work in comfort and solitude.
