The 2024 Congressional Election in Wisconsin's Third District, a contest between incumbent Derrick Van Orden and former small business owner Rebecca Cooke was a 3% victory for the incumbent in a seat that voted for Trump by 7.4%
Campaining on "gas, groceries and grandchildren" Van Orden sought to eschew his weaknesses, exploited by Cooke
Those being his temper and prior support for the false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump (including attending the capitol insurrection)
Cooke by contrast campaigned heavilly on moderation, enphasizing how she would take on "Big Ag", improve healthcare accesssibility as well as fighting to secure the border
However, Van Orden hit back against Cooke, seeking to portray her as a political insider for past fundraising work she had done for the democratic party.
This, plus tying her to Kamala Harris in a district the VP lost by 7.4% allowed Van Orden to hold on by 2.7%, securing him his second term in congress.
In his underperformance, Van Orrden held clossest to Trump Numbers in the more suburban areas of the district, such as the suburbs around Eau Claire, Stevens Point and La Cross, falling furthest behind trump in the more rural areas of the district.
