The 2016 WV State Legislative Election, Following democrats losing both chambers for the first time in over a century in 2014, the hard right turn the state took in 2016 brought with Trump some limited Coattails, increasing the GOP advantage the senate from 18-16 to 22-12 and reducing the GOP advantage from 64-36 to 63-37 in the House of Delegates.

This split decision was likely due to a combination of factors, such as these senate seats last being up in 2012—when Down Ballot Democrats were stronger in West Virginia—whereas the House was up in 2016, as well as the hyper local nature of these races even as Trump's landslide in West Virginia sped up the decline of the WV Democratic party faster than it had declined in the Obama years.
