The 2022 WA-03rd Congressional election, Following Incumbent Jaime Herrera-Beutler's third place finish in the Washington Jungle Primary, a contest between Moderate Rural Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Far-Right Joe Kent was set up; one which MGP surprisingly won as it was a seat that hadn't voted for a Democrat since 2008.
Following Herrera-Beutler's loss to far right challenger Joe Kemp due to her voting to Impeach Donald Trump following the January 6, 2021 Capitol Insurrection, MGP—who had originally sought to challenge Perez—was thrown into the position of being the main challenger to Kent.
Herein Kent was controvercial due to his assosiation with the far right group 'The Proud Boys' Hiring one of them for his campaign, in addition to vowing to Impeach Joe Biden and charging then Reagan Appointeed NIH director Anthony Fauci with Murder
By contrast, MGP enphasized her support from Republicans, support for Abortion rights following the Dobbs v Jackson U.S. Supreme Court Decision, and her support for Gun Rights—making her appear to voters as signifncantly more moderate than the far right Kent.
All of this, plus outspending Kent on Television—despite roughly equal spending by both camps and Kent trying to tie MGP to inflation, rising crime rates, and the unpopularity of the Portland Democrats—allowed for Marie Gluessenkamp Perez to narrowly prevail over the far-right Joe Kent.
