The 2025 VA Gubernatorial Election, a contest between former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger and incumbent Lt. Governor Winsome Earl-Sears resulted in Spanberger thrashing Earl-Sears by a 15.4% landslide — the Largest Democratic win in VA since it became a two party Democracy.
Following Donald Trump's victory in the preceding Presidential election, it was considered Spanberger's race to lose despite facing a statewide electd who won alongside Gov. Glenn Youngkin's victory four years prior, and despite it seeing less investment than usual due to that; Spanberger pressed her advantage.
With the election occurring in the wake of the unpopularity of the Department of Government Efficiency that caused significant harm to the economy of Northern Virginia, Spanberger sought to attack Earl-Seats on a litany of her past hard-right statements, — such as Earl-Sear's strident opposition to Abortion access — as well as the bad state of the Virginia Economy and Tie Her to Donald Trump.
With a litanny of ads using a clip of Earl-Sears saying "I AM SPEAKING [...] I AM SPEAKING!" Earl-Sears was hard-pressed to hit back, attempting to turn back the clock and best Spanberger on the issue of Education, Parental rights that was believed to have won Youngkin the governorship in 2021.
However, a $30 million fundraising advantage for Spanberger — and Donald Trump's unpopularity, as well as a mediocre campaign on the part of Earl-Sears herself — proved too much for Earle-Sears, Swamping her and the rest of the GOP Ticket in a historic Democratic Landslide.
In the most low-profile 2025 statewide contest in Virginia, Progressive State Senator Ghazala Hashmi bested Broadcaster John Reid by a 12% Margin, winning convincingly due to the landslide Democratic environment created by Donald Trump and Abigail Spanberger.
While Governor Youngkin tried to throw Reid off of the ticket in August due to the GOP's knowledge of scandals, once those scandals broke — said scandals being Reid promoting NAZI Porn on personal accounts — they didn't break through the cycle.
As such, in a low profile race, only the usual appeals were heard, with Hasmi campaigning on protecting medicaid, her past as an educator, and expanding apprenticeships,
while Reid accused Hashmi of being a fake moderate who voted to give taxpayer funded tuition to illegal immigrants and reduce criminal punishments for those who assault police officers and firefighters. Likewise Reid campaigned against trans people participating in sports of their current gender as well as DEI and other culture war issues
However, being that it was a Dem landslide year throughout the country, and most people didn't pay attention to this race, Reid lost convincingly, with Hashmi running even with most Democratic Candidates in the General Assembly, and at Virginia's partisan lean.
In the most competitive Statewide contest of the major 2025 Elections, Former Delegate Jay Jones bested Incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares by D+7%, despite a major scandal rocketing his campaign in the closing months of 2025.
Once a rising star in Virginia Dem politics, nearly ousting incumbent Attorney General Mark Herring in 2021, Jones was on a somewhat-difficult glide path to the Attorney Generalship prior to the scandal due to the burgeoning landslide Dem Environment in Virginia.
However after the scandal came out, — where Jones had sent texts to a GOP colleague where he fantasized about Shooting GOP Speaker Todd Gilbert and his children dying in their mother's arms — all of that was thrown into question.
However, focusing his attacks on tying Jason Miyares to Donald Trump, and claiming that the incumbent Attorney General supports an abortion ban — and the VADP condemning Jones' statements but not his candidacy — allowed him to keep his head above water in the final weeks.
Beyond the scandal that rocked the Attorney Generals' race, Miyares likewise attacked Jones on not completing his community service hours after he was caught speeding — putting Virginians in danger. Claiming that Jones worked for his PAC in order to satisfy his community service requirements.
Miyares also accused Jones, throughout the campaign, of being soft on Crime. Highlighting Jones' lack of prosecutorial experience, clemency for convicts, support of bail reform and 'allowing criminals convicted of murder and rape on the streets'.
In the end, punctuated by campaigning where by the end Miyares sought to get crossover support, the environment was too Democratic for the Incumbent Attorney General to be able to win, losing by 7% as Spanberger won by 15% — overperforming GOP Gov Candidate Winsome Earl Sears by over 8%
In doing so, resulting in the scandal-tarred former Delegate Jay Jones becoming the Attorney General of Virginia.
