2024 VA Presidential Election
The 2024 Presidential Election in Virginia, a contest between Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Donald Trump in the Blue leaning state resulted in a modest victory for Harris, wherein the Vice President's lackluster margin was a signal early in the night that the former President would come back to the White House.
Whilst her modest victory was a symptom of a broader national 7% swing right from 2020, where Virginia trended towards the democratic party by 2%, Harris held up best relative to that swing in the Richmond suburbs (which stayed static or, like Chesterfield, swung left), followed by the state's white rural areas (which barely swung right)
Herein, the largest amount of bleeding for Democrats came from their longtime African American base in Southside Virginia, which matched the national swing to the right, and Northern virginia, which Trended right.
In her national Popular vote loss, Harris ended up matching Hillary Clinton's 2016 showing in the state, showing how the once pivotal swing state was cleanly in the Democratic Column for Harris in 2024, despite it's swing state status partially rescusitating whilst President Joe Biden was the presumptive nominee.
