The 2024 VA-05 GOP Primary, a contest between state Senator John McGuire and Incumbent Bob Good resulted in a close fought win for McGuire—in doing so ousting the controvercial head of the House GOP Freedom Caucus.
Folowing Bob Good's supporting of Ron DeSantis in the GOP Presidential primary he became persona non-grata amongst GOP voters despite his Arch-Conservitism as he had Crossed the popular among them former President Trump.
With Trump, prior to the election, not just endorsing McGuire but denouncing outright Good he had all but sealed the Congressman's fate.
Despite this, through campaigning on the same conservatism that allowed him to oust Denver Riggleman four years prior, he was able to hold McGuire to a 0.6% victory, nearly overcoming the vast hurdle that lacking a Trump endorsement presents in GOP primaries.
Despite losing, it was so close that—despite it being outside the recount threshhold and in an attempt to overturn it—Good paid for a recount in a final attempt to remain in congress, failing and being officially booted out of the body come 2025.
