The 2021 Virginia State Senate and House of Delegates elections, a contest testing the popularity of Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin's versus the crosscurrent of Virginia's partisanship resulted in Democrats holding the senate and gaining the house from their 2021 loss.
With candidates campaigning on the issue of Abortion following the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022—and Republicans coalescing around a 15-week abortion ban in order to blunt the attacks—the outcome was a Loss for VA republicans who spent Bucketloads of money in an attempt to gain a Trifecta & enact lasting change in VA.
To do this, in addition to being on the defensive about Abortion, the VAGOP argued for a majority to lower taxes, support "parental involvement" in schools, and improving public safety. Wheras Dems overall argued that they would be a "Check" on Glenn Youngkin's administration.
Overall, the Democrat's arguments won out, and with some close elections, such as Danica Roem's in SD-30, and Schuyler VanValkenburg's in SD-16 in the senate, and Michael Feggans (HD-97), plus Joshua Cole (HD-65) and Nadarius Clark (HD-84) in the House of Delegates—Democrats were able to capture both chambers to stop conservative legislation.
