The 2001 Gubernatorial Election in the Commonwealth of Virginia a contest between 1996 Senate Runner up, Northern Virginia Businessman Mark Warner, and incumbent Attorney General Mark Earley resulted in a win for the Rich Northern Virginia Businessman.
A Key point in his win Was Warner's wealth and fundraising prowes, as he started ads in august and didn't let up until after the election, compared to Earley's more modest ad buys focused in October.
Further, Warner Campaigned as an ardent moderate, with his ads eschewing tax increases, sponsoring a NASCAR Race truck in addition to being featuring symbols of rural Virginia such as bluegrass music (See:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BchLv9B_Gj8).
Earley by contrast tried to hit Warner on Taxes but the businessman was sufficiently innoculated from such attacks.
Warner's focus on Rural Virginia is credited with handing him the governors office, especially when considering that the 5.1% margin was significantly closer than expected.
In terms of House of Delegates districts, both Warner and Earley were tied 50/50 out of 100 Districts, in terms of Senate districts Warner won 19/40 to Earley's 21/40, in terms of Congressional districts Warner won 5/11 to Earley's 6/11 and in terms of counties/independent cities Warner won 75/134 to Earley's 59/134
