The 2022 RI 2nd Congressional election, a contest between two term RI Treasurer Seth Magaziner and frm. Cranston Mayor Allan Fung was an upset win for Magaziner in the tossup contest to replace retiring 22 year incumbent Jim Langevin
A Nominally competitive congressional District made Safe by Langevin; the recruitment of Fung put this seat as a strong pickup opportunity for the GOP.
Here, his prior strong performance in the 2014 and 2018 against Gina Raimondo, as well as his legacy for Rescuing Cranston were beleived to possibly be able to get him the seat.
To this effect, he campaigned as a strident hardworking moderate who would turn the page on Trumpism whilst calling Magaziner a political insider who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth who never had to work a day in his life.
Magaziner by contrast campaigned on his record as teeasurer—highlighting the strong performance of the state's pension. He also sought to paint Fung as a rubber stamp for the GOP agenda, claiming he would cut social secutity & medicare, as well as vote for an abortion ban.
In the end, Magaziner's attacks worked, and in what turned out to be a disapointing night for the GOP, won this western Rhode Island seat by nearly four points.
