The 2024 Puerto Rico House of Representatives election in House district 40, a rematch between 3 term PPD Representative Ángel Matos and 2020 PNP Nominee Sergio Estévez during the 2024 PNP wave resulted in a surprize loss for Matos
While Matos significantly over-performed PPD Gov Candidate Jesus Manuel Ortiz in the seat, holding on in this historically PNP seat was difficult due to the weak result that Ortiz achieved in the seat.
Moreover, Estevez only slightly underperforming Jenniffer Gonzalez's result in the seat aided in his win. However, a Key factor in this win was the Strong Result by PIP Gov Candidate Juan Dalmau.
In this sense, the strong result attained by Dalmau in the seat ended up having limited coattails, with PIP candidate Now-Representative by Addition Nelie Lebrón attaining 24.6% and successfully dividing Matos' base, allowing Estevez to upset the Representative.
Resident Commissioner
Looking over to the plebiscite and the Resident Commissionership, two races that ended up disconnected from the rest of the contests in Puerto Rico, we find that Resident Commishioner Pablo Jose Hernandez won a strong 43.5% Plurality in the seat, avoiding vote splitting alongside a weak result from PNP Senator William Villafañe.
While Statehood, likewise, won a 26.7% majority over the votes cast in the plebiscite, with Free Assosiation coming in a Distant Second and Independence coming in an even more distant third.
