The 2024 Puerto Rican Gubernatorial election, a contest between Incumbent Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González and three time PIP Candidate Juan Dalmau was a historic affair that saw the PIP, via it's alliance with MVC, come in second place for the second time since the party's founding.
Following her victory over incumbent Governor Pedro Pierluisi in the primary, for much of the campaign Gonzalez was believed to have had a simple route to La Fortaleza and—despite some late breaking momentum in Dalmau's favor—that turned out to be the case, winning the second largest PNP win ever.
Here, in an attempt to stop a PNP win, a small number of PPD Soberanistas threw their support behind Dalmau, with him even getting longtime PPD Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez (and AOC) supporting his campaign for this reason.
However, Dalmau, with this PPD soberanista support, was unable to grow much larger than the Alianza's (PIP+MVC's) combined 28% showing—only increasing by 4% in the current Count, whereas González has grown from Pierluisi's 33% to (as of writing) achieve 40% in the General Canvas.
I'll be covering the race again when all the results are certified, as the data on this map—which formulaically allocates the advanced votes to the precincts—only covers that which was counted on Election night, which lacks ~100K votes counted since then (a good chunk of which is still being counted/divulged)
The Gov map without the Advanced votes Allocated:
The 2024 PR Gubernatorial Election, a “historic” contest between Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González, Former Territorial Senator Juan Dalmau, Territorial Representative Jesus Manuel Ortiz and San Sebastián Mayor Javier Jiménez saw the PNP win by the second largest margin in
It’s history, only being eclipsed by the 2008 Gubernatorial Election.
Beleived to be a route for Jenniffer throughout most of the campaign—following the primary especially—there was a period in October where the discourse thought eventual second place finisher Juan Dalmau could win.
A period that was punctuated in Jenniffer’s lead falling from 12% to 7% in the polling average. But nonetheless, Jenniffer Won, winning a third consecutive Gubernatorial term for the New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico—a feat it first achieved in 2024.
