The 2025 NYC Comptroller Democratic primary, a contest mainly between Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, and Term Limited Councilman Justin Brannan following Incumbent Brad Lander's retirement to run for mayor resulted in a commanding win for Levine in a good-natured yet ideological contest
Focusing on different ways to fight Funding cuts for NYC, due to the Trump Administrations Actions, as wel as their respective personalities and fighter bona fides—Brennan tended to attain most of the progressive support, attaining the endorsements of Progressive Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani, VT Senator Bernie Sanders the Working Families Party and Councilman Chi Ossé,
While Levine got more moderate endorsements, such as Richie Torres, Adrianno Espaillat State Senator John Liu, George Latimer, and the three other Democratic Borough Presidents: Vannessa Gibson (Bronx), Antonio Reynoso (Brooklyn), and Donovan Richards (Queens)
This broad support, combined with a strong money advantage—and Brannan getting some minor scandals—allowed for Levine to trounce the councilman, being the commanding frontrunner to succeed Progressive Comptroller Brad Lander in the office
