The 2022 NY Assembly District 82 Democratic Primary, a contest between 20 year incumbent and Chairman of the NY education comittee Michael Benedetto and AOC aid Jonathan Soto resulted in a 20% win for Chairman Benedetto
Despite the large victory for Benedetto, Soto found a strong attack in donations that the incumbent once received from Republican President Donald Trump and Spearheading the development of the Trump Golf Course near the Whitestone bridge
In his coalition, Benedetto did best in the Italian American white parts of the district in Country Club, Edgewater park and Throgs neck, as well as in the African-American dominant Co-Op City
By Contrast, as a consequence of being Puerto Rican himself and being tied to the district's popular Puerto Rican congresswoman, Soto did well among the Puerto Ricans in the seat, winning them comfortably.
It should be noted that this is one of the more conservative Democratic Seats in the NYC section of the NY legislature, as it is one that voted for both Eric Adams and Corey Johnson in 2021 by comanding Margins.
As a consequence, a Soto win in 2024 would mark a sea change, and probably make him a vunrable DSA incumbent in 2026 to a strong moderate challenger.
