The 2018 NY Gubernatorial Primary, a contest between two-term incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo and Sex & the City Star Cynthia Nixon saw the controvercial-among-Democrats voter win renomination by a near-identical margin as his first contested primary in 2014.
Publicly ignoring Nixon, even as he outspent her and marshaled support of NY's multiple powerbrokers, Cuomo worked pro-actively to ensure that the enthusiasm that had brought then candidate AOC to congress didn't topple or weaken him.
To this effect, in outspending Nixon, the former Sex & the City star had struggled to raise funds throughout her campaign—with Cuomo by the end of the contest outraising her $25 Million to $2 Million.
Resulting from this, despite Nixon Allies besting 6 of the 8 Members of the Andrew Cuomo supported Independent Democratic Conference (I.D.C.) which handed control of the NY State Senate to the NYGOP Nixon herself was unable to best Cuomo.
While the money itself was the big factor in Cuomo's win, also cited as factors was Nixon's inability—even with the I.D.C.—to tarnish Cuomo's record with Democratic voters on subjects such as the minimum wage, paid-family leave, gun control, and marriage equality.
Beyond this, the money also papered over some late breaking scandals for Cuomo, such as an inflammatory mailer that accused Nixon of Antisemitism as well as questions that he had offered 'enticements' through his power as governor to the company building the new Tappan-Zee (officially Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge) to finish the construction on schedule.
However, in the end, Cuomo still won the nomination comfortably, later besting then Dutches Co. Executive Marc Molinaro in the general.
In winning, Cuomo did best among the City's Jewish Orthodox, Latino, and African American communities, while Nixon was able to best him in the ascendingly progressive Queens-Brooklyn 'Commie' Corridor from Astoria/Steinway (Long Island City) south to Park-Slope/Windsor Terrace,
while also doing Well in Inwood/Hudson heights and in the Tribeca/Soho area of Downtown Manhattan.
