The 2017 NYC 30th Council District Election, a contest between Moderate Democrat Elizabeth Crowley & Conservative Dem Running as a Republican Robert Holden resulted in a 0.7% victory for Holden in an election where Crowley was dragged down by Mayor de Blasio's local unpopularity
Holden, a McGovern-Sanders 2016 voter, pressed three main issues in the campaign, Housing the district's local homeless population in local hotels, the potential closing of Rikers Island resulting in a Local Jail, and Councilwoman Crowley's independence from de Blasio
Here, Crowley had opposed de Blasio on housing the homeless in local hotels, but was a major supporter of closing Rikers, which in turn combined with the moderate to conservative bent of the seat and de Blasio's 15% loss to create an environment that caused Crowley to lose
The Resulting loss was an embarrassment for Queens Democratic Machine—as they notonly failed to defend an incumbent, but an incumbent who was a scion of the same political familly that resulted in the County Party's boss—Congressman Joe Crowley.
