The 2025 Dem Gubernatorial Primary, a contest with a plethora of political heavy hitters in the state saw Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill best a divided field with a broad coalition of New Jerseyans—centered mostly around Suburban, and exurban New Jersey, as well as North Hudson.
In a contest with little definition outside of the eventual winner being the Frontrunner; the second place finisher Ras Baraka—enphasizing his minority roots, progressive Bona fides, and opposition to ICE (being arrested by ICE while trying to ascess an ICE Facility)
—won minorities outside of the core of South Jersey, winning Willingboro, Trenton, Newark, Paterson, Passaic City and the African American heavy precincts in Clifton, Hackensack Teaneck and Englewood.
Third place candidate Steve Fulop, by contrast— campaigning on being against corruption, the machine, and on building housing in NJ—only won in South Orange, Atlantic City, Jersey City, and a few scattered municipalities
—with him being held to a narrow win, with less than 50% of the vote in Jersey City. in this, most of his wins candidates came from local machine support; being endorsed by Atlantic City Mayor Marty Smal Jr, and with South Orange Mayor Sheena Collum being named his running mate
Beyond the three main candidates, Fourth Place Candidate Congressman Josh Gottheimer—who campaigned on affordability and cutting taxes—only won in the Bergen county towns he represented or was adjacent to,
fifth place candidate—NJEA President Sean Spiller Supplanted Ras Baraka as the candidate of choice for Latinos and some African Americans in South Jersey/save for Atlantic city and Pleasantville
and last place candidate, Former Senate President Steve Sweeney won in Gloucester County—which he had represented as a Freeholder and partly as state Senator—and Salem County—which he represented as it's senator for over a decade.
Sweeney campaigned on his support for disability rights and his roots in organized labor in the ironworkers union; attaining the most union support of all candidates
The 2025 NJ Dem Gubernatorial Primary in CD-05, with it's Congressman—Josh Gottheimer—in the race, and spending $14Million in independent expenditures and $8Million through his campaign was set to win it from the get go; a feat which he did accomplish,
besting eventual Gubernatorial nominee, CD-11 Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill by 15% with a plurality of 38%—concentrated in the northern Bergen Suburbs he's represented since 2016, while losing the Portions of Passaic and Sussex counties he's likewise represented to Sherrill and
African Americans/Latinos in Teaneck, Englewood, and Hackensack to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.
The 2025 New Jersey Gubernatorial Primary in New Jersey's 9th District, an exemplar of Newark Mayor Baraka's consolidation among Minorities, Congresswoman Sherrill's consolidation among suburbanites, Congressman Gottheimer's strength among the areas he used to represent/the stronger areas for the Bergen County Democratic Organization
and Jersey City Mayor Fulop's Mid-teens showing throughout North Jersey Saw the Newark Mayor take the 9th CD with a 28% Plurality, just a tenth of a point over the elected Gubernatorial nominee Mikie Sherrill
Fundamentally, the reason for his win in this Paterson-centred seat was his winning with over 50% of the vote in Paterson NJ—mostly thanks to African Americans, likewise winning Hispanics in, and thus the towns of, Passaic City and Garfield City.
By Contrast, Sherrill Kept it close thanks to holding close to Baraka's margins among Palestinians, and winning Bangladeshi Muslims, dominating thje field with white suburbanites in Rutherford, Wayne, and Clifton among others—holding down Baraka's margins among hispanics in Kearny
even as Gottheimer won Hispanics in areas he used to represent such as, Lodi, in towns adjacent to him, Maywood, and in towns controlled by local machines, such as Cliffside Park and Fairview
The 2025 NJ Gubernatorial Election in CD-11, the congressional district of eventual winner Mikie Sherril was the Congressional district that gave a single candidate the largest share of the vote, and likewise the largest margin.
Here, her strength in the Educated White Suburbs of Morris County, the county gave her 62% of the vote, Italian-American areas in the northwest of Essex County, and her home in Northern Montclair allowed her to Swamp Baraka's support among the few Minorities in the seat
Fulop's support in Maplewood/South Orange Village (the latter of which had it's mayor as Fulop's LG nominee: Sheena C. Collum), Gottheimer's support in Livingston and Millburn, as well as Baraka's support among the African Americans and Latinos in the seat.
The 2025 NJ Gubernatorial Primary, a comfortable election for CD-11 Rep Mikie Sherrill saw her win 379 of the state's 564 Municipalities.
Her opponents, in order of Voteshare won the remaining municipalities as such:
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka: 33 Municipalities
Jersey city Mayor Steve Fulop: 10 Municipalities
NJ-05 Rep Josh Gottheimer: 60 Municipalities
NJEA President and Former Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller: 17 Municipalities
Former Senate President Steve Sweeney: 60 Municipalities
In terms of where their votes were concentrated, Sherrill Saw a concentration of votes among the North Jersey and Expanded Central Jersey Suburbs. Doing best in Morris County and Worst in South Jersey—especially Camden—as well as Newark, Bergen County Jersey City and Lakewood.
Ras Baraka, by Contrast Saw a concentration of votes in the African-American & Latino heavy areas of New Jersey, Performing Best in North Jersey and worst south of Burlington County.
Steve Fulop had a rather diffused coalition, performing best in some progressive areas such as Westville South Orange Village/Maplewood, as well as doing well in the ancestrally Dem areas of Ocean county—winning North Bergeen and Atlantic city due to local machine support while barely carrying his governed Jersey City.
Josh Gottheimer by Contrast did best in Bergen County, and the non-Bergen areas that he represented in addition to performing strongly with all types of Jewish voter—winning Orthodox Jews and carrying Lakewood thanks to the Vaad Endorsement.
Sean Spiller did best amongst south Jersey Minorities whilst winning minorities in North Jersey that didn't otherwise go to Baraka or Sherrill—likewise winning a large chunk of voters in Gottheimer's district due to his money and mailers convincing voters without an obvious candidate to go to him.
Lastly, Sweeney only won votes in South Jersey—winning a negligible number of votes in North Jersey—with his sttongest concentration being in the Ancestrally Democratic Areas of Camden as well as his home county of Gloucester and Salem/Cumberland which he represented in the state Senate.
The voteshare for candidates by Precinct showcase much the same coalitions as the voteshares by Municipality, and they are as such:
The 2025 NJ Gubernatorial Democratic Primary, a contest that saw NJ-11 Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill best a divided field by 13% likewise saw her carry a majority of 24/40 State Legislative Districts, 8/12 Congressional Districts, and 15/21 Counties.
Her opponents, in order of voteshare carried the following LDs, CDs, and Counties
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka: 8/40 LDs, 2/12 CDs, 2/21 Counties
Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop: 1/40 LDs, 0/12 CDs, 0/21 Counties
NJ-05 Congressman Josh Gottheimer: 4/40 LDs, 1/12 CDs, 1/21 Counties
NJEA President Sean Spiller: 0/40 LDs, 0/12 CDs, 1/21 Counties
Frm. Senate President Steve Sweeney: 3/40 LDs, 1/12 CDs, 2/21 Counties
The 2025 NJ Governor Primary in NJ-08, emphasizing the strength of the HCDO (Stack Faction) among this CD, despite the seat being demographically favorable to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, and home town son Steven Fulop, NJ-11 Rep. Mikie Sherrill Carried it by a strong 11% Margin
Here, While Baraka carried Latinos/Portuguese voters in Newark + African Americans/Latinos in Elizabeth by wide Margins, Sherrill's commanding performance with North Hudson Hispanics — holding Fulop to a 2% victory in North Bergen where the HCDO (Sacco Faction) supported Fulop allowed her to come in first place.
This was over Fulop's performance in the Jersey portion of the seat — where his base in the Downtown Ward E, and strong performance the predominantly South Asian Heights delivered a ~15% plurality over Sherrill combined.
Further, Sherrill's strong performance with upscale white voters throughout the state allowed her to win the somewhat HCDO dissident town of Hoboken, while Fulop's legacy as an on-again/off-again member/foe of the HCDO and alliance with a part of the Bayonne HCDO-affiliates (who were otherwise supporting the Stack faction) through Bayonne Ward 2 Councilwoman Jaqueline Weimmer allowed him to win Bayonne by 5% over Sherrill.
