The 2024 Special Dem Primary for NJ's 10th CD, A Contest between Newark Council President Monica McIver, Linden Mayor Derek Armsted, Hudson Commissioner Jerry Walker among others resulted in McIver's win to fill the seat which was left open upon Don Payne Jr's passing.
Here, McIver got the suport of the Democratic Machine in Newark NJ as well as the overall Essex County Machine, in addition to suport from a large chunk of the Union County Machine despite Home-town favorite Derek Armsted running for the nomination.
In addition to this, while technically neutral, members of the Hudson County Democratic Organization—such as county executive Craig Guy—suported Walker, allowing him to—in addition to his name recognition—romp in the Jersey City portion of the seat.
Originally, it wasn't perceived as a sure thing that McIver would be nominated, but upon receiving the aformentioned backing from Essex, division of the Union and Hudson suport (with a significant chunk going to McIver), and a strong financial advantage for her any lane to challenge McIver was closed early on
As a result, allowing for McIver to win the nomination to fill out the remainder of Don Payne's term easilly, winning by 33.8% over her closest Rival, with 47.4% of the vote.
Of note: Payne died too late to remove him from the primary ballot, and while this was a primary for the special election McIver was subsequently confirmed as the nominee for the general election following her victory.
Further, the line lawsuit had no impact in this race, as irrespective of the illegality of the line, the structure would not have impacted a race that only had one contest on the ballot.
