2024 Cumberland NJ Clerkship Election
The 2024 Cumberland County Clerk election, a surprising victory for Incumbent Clerk Celeste Riley which, alongside the Dems flipping one of the County Commissioners seats, marked the best downballot night for Cumberland Dems even as Donald Trump flipped the county on the presidential level for the first time since 1988.
Here while GOP Candidate Victoria Lods had the wind in her sails due to this minority heavy county being a Primed county for Trump to Flip, in addition to an ascendant GOP machine at the hands of Senator Mike testa
she also had Democratic divisions to exploit, as the Norcross alligned faction and non-Norcross alligned faction had a messy primary for the Commishiner seats, a primary the Norcross faction won.
As such, even while NJ was expected to go handilly for Vice President Kamala Harris and Representative Andy Kim, this county was one most observers thought they would lose.
But that was not the case, thanks to Joe Salerno spending truckloads of money in his race against Representative Jeff Van Drew, as well as a large amount of undervote/ticket splitting in the Clerk and Commissioner's races (for frm. Sheriff Robert Austino & Riley) both Dems were able to come out victorious.
In this election, the GOP only came out with one incumbent, Joseph Sileo Jr, winning the second commissioner seat, besting Democrat John Capizola by 50 votes.
