The 2023 NJ LD-36 Election, a contest between Senate Budget Chair Paul Sarlo, and Veteran Chris Auriemma saw Sarlo landslide Auriema in this Clinton+18.1%, Biden+13.7%, and Trump +4.5% Seat by a comanding 23.3%—the third best electoral performance of his career.
Also campaining with him were Incumbents Clinton Calabrese (D-Cliffside Park) and Gary Schaer (D-Passaic City)—with them winning combined by a slightly smaller D+21.8%
This slight underperformance came because of the low-profile nature of the race, despite lying within a seat that Trump would flip by 5% the following year, Sarlo & co. had a large cash advantage over the GOP Slate
A slate which had as a member (Joseph Viso) who in 2009 had smeared Fecal mater over a daycare center.
Despite this, the GOP slate did campaign, mostly on Social issues such as opposing Sex-education and gender transition, but it was nowhere near enough—and despite a late minor cash infusion by the NJGOP they lost each race by over 20%,
with the closest race (between Craig Auriema and Gary Schaer) still being over a 21% margin.
