The 1984 NJ-14th Congressional election, a contest between three term incumbent Frank Guarini and retired Jersey City School Teacher Edward Magee resulted in a landslide reelection for Guarini as he took on the futile task of aiding the Mondale-Ferraro ticket win in NJ
While he campaigned all over the state in the aforementioned sisyphean task of helping Walter Mondale win the presidency; the congressman defended himself against attacks by Magee that he was soft on Communism, and an old type of 'tax raising democrat' — doing so by emphasizing his support from veterans groups and arguing that his support for government assistance programs was to aid raising the quality of life for constituents.
However, despite the campaign, the biggest factor looming over the race was the Reagan landslide — Magee publicly noted that he had no chance of winning unless Reagan ushered in a red wave in Hudson County, whereby Magee hoped he could win on his coattails.
But despite Reagan carrying Hudson County — and winning the district by R+7%, Guarini was still a incredibly popular incumbent, and despite the campaign Magee underfunded — allowing for the incumbent to over perform by nearly 40%, winning every town in the seat outside of the increasingly Cuban-dominated Union City
Reagan, by contrast, won every town in the seat save for 2: Jersey City, where the Black and Puerto Rican populations overcame the white vote to give Mondale the city, and Hoboken, where the numerous Puerto Rican population did the same.
