The 2025 Omaha Mayoral Election, A contest between three term Mayor Jean Stohert & Douglas Co. Treasurer John Ewing Jr saw Ewing Ousting Stohert to become the first Dem elected since 2013 when Stohert Ousted then-mayor Jim Suttle, & first African American elected to the position
A race defined by two well-known candidates, Stohert was significantly harmed by the primary, which saw fellow republican, Sen. Mike McDonnell pummel her with attacks on her support for supporting Omaha’s Streetcar plan, as well as attacking her on Poor street quality
The Street quality attack was echoed by Ewing in the general, who mostly sat back and allowed the Republicans to attack each other in the primary—likewise focusing on a bread and butter/reliable providing of city services campaign; paying off to make him mayor.
Stohert tried to redirect focus onto Ewing in the general, attacking him over payouts that the Douglas County Treasurers office made during his tenure—based on calculations a state audit found were not made by his office—as well as attacking him over the issue of transgender rights, which Ewing categorized as a “political distraction”.
In the end, however, these attacks didn’t work, and Ewing Won, becoming the first Dem to hold the Omaha Mayoralty in 12 years.
