The 2017 Montana At-Large Congressional Special Election, a contest between New Jersey Businessman/2016 GOP Governor nominee Greg Gianforte, & Montana Singer/Bernie Sanders 2016 supporter Rob Quist resulted in a expensive & hotly contested contest that was capped off with Gianforte body slamming a reporter
While the DCCC didn't spend due to them believing that Quist was a subpar candidate — angering progressives in the Democratic Party — the race was nonetheless historically expensive for Montana, Seeing Quist spend $6.5 Million to Gianforte's $9.5 Million
Here, Quist — who emphasized his support of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders throughout the campaign — benefited significantly from the ongoing Affordable Care Act repeal attempt by the Republican party, where their haphazard and unpopular proposals were acting as an anchor to Gianforte's chances
To this effect, when being asked on a question on whether he supported the GOP's healthcare proposal — previously defering to the Congressional Budget Office — Gianforte, upon being presented with a CBO report on the bill, body slamming and throwing said reporter so as to avoid answering the question
With a flurry of condemnation following the event, including multiple newspapers retracting their endorsement and Gianforte being charged with — and later pleading guilty to — misdemeanor charges Gianforte was perceived to be in some jeopardy; something despite Trump reiterating his support for him.
In the end, however, the late-breaking scandal was not enough for Quist to win — losing to the former GOP runner up by a narrow 5.58%, with Gianforte being held to under 50% of the vote.
