The 2020 GA-14th CD GOP Primary, a contest following the retirement of five term Representative Tom Graves that resulted in Conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene besting Neurologist John Cowan likewise began the notorious career of MTG.
Here, following Graves' retirement, Local GOP leaders convinced Greene to move onto running in this seat instead of running against Rep. Lucy McBath, whom Rs were targeting at the time — with them convincing Greene to switch being to try and get a stronger candidate in the race
As such, Greene entered into the contest to succeed the retiring rep in the safely GOP district — and with her local fame due to her vocal support for Trump and social media following she was able to calm a 40% plurality in the Primary; being drawn into a runoff with John Cowan.
Following her first place showing in the runoff, Greene began receiving a plethora of media attention, with the press uncovering multiple racist and antisemitic comments.
In response, Greene — campaigning on supporting Trump, fighting ANTIFA, and against ‘radical women in congress ripping the country apart’ — accused the press of trying to enforce political correctness.
While she faced a wide range of condemnations from Democratic and Republican leaders apart, the latter did little to help Cowan win.
This came as Greene reversed past statements where she declared that 9/11 was done by the federal government as well as her position on the QANON conspiracy theory.
Cowan, for his part, campaigned on Greene’s past, calling her “crazy,” and a danger to Republican’s electoral prospects — but it was not enough, and Greene claimed the nomination & in doing so a seat in congress for an area that had not sent a democrat to congress since the 1994 Republican Revolution.
Following her win, Greene was called a “rising star” by President Donald Trump, a man whom she had dedicated the prior three years to. A stardome that Trump would later work to snuff out just over five years following.
