The 2018 Florida 26th Congressional District election, a contest between Ecuadorian-American Debbie Mucarsel-Powell and incumbent Cuban-American Carlos Curbelo was one of the most expensive contests of the 2018 Midterm Elections, with Curbelo falling to the Anti-Trump surge of said election.
Enphasizing her immigrant roots, the American Dream and Curbelo's inaction on immigration, Murcarsel Powell cast the incumbent as a 'do nothing Washington Politician'. By contrast, Curbelo accused Mucarsel-Powell—via assosiation with her husband—of having shady business dealings with Ukrainian Oligarchs.
Mucarsel-Powel would deny involvements with her husband's dealings. However, what ended Curbelo's congressional career was the fact that Trump was horrifically unpopular nationally, and while this district would Zoom right in the following years, in 2018 said unpopularity was enough to cost Curbelo his job.
